What is a Moon sign, explained simply?
Your Moon sign (Rashi) is the zodiac sign the Moon was passing through at the exact moment you were born. Vedic astrology treats it as the sign governing your mind, emotions and instinctive reactions — often weighted as more important than the Sun sign that western astrology centers on.
Every planet occupies some sign of the zodiac at any given moment, the same way every planet in your birth chart has a sign. The Moon's sign gets singled out for special attention in Vedic astrology (Jyotish) because Indian tradition reads the Moon, not the Sun, as the primary indicator of personality and inner life. This calculator takes your exact birth details, works out the Moon's precise position using the Swiss Ephemeris, and tells you exactly which of the twelve signs it landed in.
How the Moon sign is actually calculated
The zodiac is a 360-degree circle split into twelve 30-degree signs, starting from Aries at 0 degrees. The Moon's exact longitude at your birth moment — worked out from your birth date, time and place — gets divided by 30, and the whole number tells you which sign it fell in.
Vedic astrology uses the Lahiri ayanamsha to measure this longitude, which is about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac that western sun-sign astrology uses. This is why a Vedic Moon sign calculation and a western calculation of the exact same birth moment often land one sign apart — they are measuring from different reference points on the same sky, not disagreeing about where the Moon actually was.
Moon sign vs Sun sign vs Nakshatra
These three get confused constantly, so here is the distinction in one place:
- Sun sign — fixed by your birth date alone, changes roughly once a month, and is what western astrology (the "star sign" people usually mean) centers its readings on.
- Moon sign (Rashi) — depends on your exact birth time as well as date, since the Moon changes sign roughly every two to two and a quarter days. Vedic astrology centers its readings on this instead of the Sun sign.
- Nakshatra — a finer division of the same Moon position: 27 nakshatras of 13°20' each, instead of 12 signs of 30° each. Your Moon sign and nakshatra come from the exact same calculation, just sliced differently.
Because the Moon moves quickly, an accurate birth time matters more for your Moon sign than it does for your Sun sign — if you were born close to a sign change, being off by a couple of hours can change the result. Why the Moon sign matters in Vedic astrology
