What is Sade Sati?
Sade Sati — sade sat, "seven and a half" — is the stretch during which Saturn transits three signs: the one before your natal Moon, your Moon sign itself, and the one after. Saturn takes roughly two and a half years to cross a sign, so three of them comes to about seven and a half years.
It is measured from the Moon sign, not the Sun sign. This is the single most common mistake in checking it: the rashi used in Vedic astrology is where the Moon sat at birth, which usually differs from the western sun sign people know.
The three phases
- Rising (first two and a half years) — Saturn in the twelfth from the Moon. Traditionally read as pressure on expenditure, sleep and family matters.
- Peak (middle two and a half years) — Saturn over the natal Moon. The phase most written about, associated with mental strain, responsibility and health.
- Setting (final two and a half years) — Saturn in the second from the Moon. Associated with finances, speech and the winding down of the cycle.
Classical texts treat the peak as the heaviest, though Saturn's results are also read against its strength and house rulership in your own chart — which is why two people in the same phase report very different experiences.
Ashtama Shani and Ardhashtama Shani
Two related transits are counted separately from Sade Sati, and this calculator lists both:
- Ashtama Shani — Saturn in the eighth sign from your natal Moon, about two and a half years, traditionally linked to sudden change and health.
- Ardhashtama Shani (Kantaka Shani) — Saturn in the fourth from the Moon, associated with home, property and domestic peace.
How often does it come back?
Saturn orbits the zodiac in about 29.5 years, so Sade Sati returns roughly every thirty years. Most people meet it two or three times in a lifetime, and the tradition holds that its character differs each time — the first arriving in youth, the last in old age, the same transit landing on quite different lives.
How this calculator works
Your Moon's sidereal longitude is computed from your birth date, time and place using the Swiss Ephemeris with the Lahiri ayanamsha. Saturn's ingress into each sign is then scanned across a hundred-year window from your birth year, so every past and future period is listed with real dates rather than approximations.
Saturn's retrograde motion means it can re-enter a sign it has already left, so a phase may appear as more than one date range. That is expected, not a fault in the calculation.
