What is Sade Sati? The meaning of the term

Sade Sati is the roughly seven-and-a-half-year period when Saturn transits the sign before, the sign of, and the sign after your birth Moon sign. It recurs about every 30 years, is calculated from your Moon sign (not Sun sign), and is a planetary transit, not a permanent flaw in the chart.

Let's build this up piece by piece. Saturn is the slowest-moving of the classical planets — it takes about two and a half years just to cross one zodiac sign. Now, your Moon sign (more on that in a moment) is a fixed point, set the day you were born. Sade Sati — from sade sat, Hindi for "seven and a half" — is simply the name for the roughly seven-and-a-half-year window during which Saturn creeps through three signs in a row that sit around your Moon: the sign right before it, your Moon sign itself, and the sign right after it. Two and a half years times three signs is about seven and a half years. That's the entire arithmetic behind the name.

Put another way: Sade Sati means the period when Saturn is passing over and around your birth Moon. Astrologers call this a "transit" — it's simply a description of where a planet is in the sky right now compared to where the Moon was on the day you were born. It isn't a flaw baked into your chart, and it isn't something you either have or don't have, like a birthmark. Every single person, no matter their Moon sign, goes through it eventually, on a schedule set entirely by how Saturn orbits.

Because Saturn takes about 29.5 years to complete one circuit of the zodiac, Sade Sati comes around roughly every thirty years. Most people live through it two or three times: once in childhood or early adulthood, once in middle age, and, if they live long enough, once more in later life. The tradition holds that the same transit lands very differently on a twenty-year-old and a sixty-year-old, which is one reason the classical texts are careful to describe it as a period of a particular character rather than a fixed list of outcomes.

Sade Sati is calculated from your Moon sign, not your Sun sign

This is the single most common error people make when checking Sade Sati, and it produces confidently wrong answers. The rashi used throughout Vedic astrology is the sign the Moon occupied at the moment of your birth. The sign most people know — the one from newspaper horoscopes and birthday memes — is the western Sun sign, determined by the date alone.

These two are usually different. The Moon moves through the entire zodiac in about twenty-seven days, changing sign roughly every two and a quarter days, so your Moon sign depends on the day and broadly the time of your birth. Vedic astrology also uses the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsha rather than the tropical zodiac of western astrology, a difference of about twenty-four degrees, which shifts many people back a sign even before the Sun-versus-Moon question arises.

The practical consequence: if you look up "Sade Sati for Leo" because you were told you are a Leo, and your natal Moon is actually in Cancer, you will read about a period that is not yours and miss the one that is. There is no shortcut around this. You need your birth date, birth time and birth place, which is exactly what the form above asks for.

What Sade Sati is called in other Indian languages

The same seven-and-a-half-year Saturn transit is known by different names across India, and people searching in their own language often find nothing when they use the Hindi term. All of the following describe the identical astronomical event, and the calculator above computes the same dates whichever name you know it by:

• Sade Sati (साढ़े साती) — Hindi and Marathi, "seven and a half".
• Elinati Shani or Elnati Shani (ఏలినాటి శని) — Telugu. Literally the Saturn that "rules the period", and by far the most searched form in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
• Ezharai Sani (ஏழரை சனி) — Tamil, again "seven and a half Saturn". Often typed as 7.5 sani or 7 1 2 sani when people are searching from a phone keyboard.
• Elarai Shani — Kannada usage, alongside the Sade Sati spelling.
• Shani Sade Sati or Shani ki Sade Sati — common expanded forms that simply name the planet explicitly.

The three phases of Sade Sati explained

Sade Sati is conventionally divided into three phases of roughly two and a half years each, named for where Saturn sits relative to your natal Moon. The calculator above labels each of your periods by phase, with the dates on which one gives way to the next.

• Rising phase (first ~2.5 years) — Saturn occupies the twelfth sign from your Moon, the sign immediately before it. The twelfth house is traditionally associated with expenditure, foreign places, sleep and things that happen out of sight, so classical readings of this phase centre on outgoings, disrupted rest and matters that build quietly before they become visible.
• Peak phase (middle ~2.5 years) — Saturn transits your Moon sign itself, passing directly over the natal Moon. The Moon signifies the mind and emotional life in Vedic astrology, and Saturn signifies weight, delay and responsibility, so this is the phase the literature writes about most and the one people usually mean when they say they are "in" Sade Sati. It is conventionally read as a period of mental strain, increased responsibility and attention to health.
• Setting phase (final ~2.5 years) — Saturn moves into the second sign from your Moon. The second house governs accumulated wealth, family and speech, so this phase is traditionally read as the practical, financial settling-up at the end of the cycle, and as the point at which the pressure begins to lift.

Two qualifications matter more than the phase labels themselves. First, the classical texts do not read Saturn's transit in isolation: its results are weighed against Saturn's own strength in your birth chart and against the houses Saturn rules for your particular ascendant. A person whose Saturn is strong and well placed and a person whose Saturn is weak can pass through the identical phase and describe entirely different years. Second, the neat two-and-a-half-year division is an approximation. Saturn's retrograde motion means a phase can be interrupted and resumed, which is why real Sade Sati dates rarely divide into three equal blocks.

How to check whether you are in Sade Sati right now

There are only two things you need: the sign Saturn is in today, and your natal Moon sign. If Saturn is currently in your Moon sign, the one before it, or the one after it, you are in Sade Sati. That is the entire test.

1. Find your Moon sign. Not your Sun sign. Enter your birth date, time and city in the calculator above and it is computed for you, or see it alongside every other placement on the birth chart calculator.
2. Note where Saturn is. As of 2026 Saturn is in Pisces (Meena), where it has been since 29 March 2025.
3. Count. Is Saturn's sign the same as your Moon sign, one before, or one after? Same sign means the peak phase. One before your Moon means the rising phase. One after means the setting phase. Anything else and you are not in Sade Sati, though you may be in Ashtama Shani or Kantaka Shani.

The reason to use the calculator rather than do this by hand is that counting gives you a yes or no, while the calculator gives you dates — when the current phase started, when it changes, and when the whole cycle releases, including the retrograde crossings that make those boundaries messier than a simple count suggests. It also lists every cycle you have already lived through, which is often more informative than the current one: people recognise the years far better in hindsight.

Which rashis are in Sade Sati now

Saturn entered Pisces (Meena) on 29 March 2025 and stays there until 2 June 2027, when it first enters Aries. It then retrogrades back into Pisces on 20 October 2027 before returning to Aries for good on 23 February 2028. Because Sade Sati depends only on Saturn's sign, that single fact determines who is currently running it:

• Kumbh / Aquarius Moon — setting phase. Saturn is in the second from your Moon. Your Sade Sati began on 24 January 2020, when Saturn entered Capricorn, and ends on 23 February 2028 when Saturn leaves Pisces for the last time. This is the group closest to finishing.
• Meen / Pisces Moon — peak phase. Saturn is transiting your Moon sign itself. Your Sade Sati began when Saturn first reached Aquarius — briefly from 29 April 2022, then settling there on 17 January 2023 — and runs until 17 April 2030, when Saturn finally leaves Aries.
• Mesh / Aries Moon — rising phase. Saturn is in the twelfth from your Moon. Your Sade Sati began on 29 March 2025 and continues until Saturn clears Taurus in the early 2030s.

Vrishabha (Taurus) Moon is the next sign to begin: the rising phase starts when Saturn enters Aries on 2 June 2027.

Two other Saturn transits are running at the same time and are frequently confused with Sade Sati, because Saturn's position in Pisces places it awkwardly for two further signs:

• Simha (Leo) Moon is in Ashtama Shani — Saturn in the eighth from the Moon — for the same 2025 to 2028 window.
• Dhanu (Sagittarius) Moon is in Ardhashtama Shani, also called Kantaka Shani — Saturn in the fourth from the Moon.

Every other Moon sign — Vrishabha, Mithuna, Karka, Kanya, Tula, Vrischika, Makara — is currently outside all three of these transits. If you were told otherwise, it is worth checking your Moon sign rather than your Sun sign before assuming the reading applies. Sade Sati dates for all twelve rashis

Every Moon sign gets its Sade Sati on the same fixed rotation, because it depends only on Saturn's position. The table below gives each rashi its current or next cycle, computed from Saturn's actual sign ingresses rather than a two-and-a-half-years-per-sign estimate. Dates are first contact to final release, on the Lahiri ayanamsha. Saturn's retrogrades mean the boundaries are crossings rather than clean switches — Meena, for example, had Saturn brush Aquarius from 29 April to 12 July 2022 before it settled there on 17 January 2023, which is why some sources give the later date.

Two things stand out from the table. Cycles overlap: because Sade Sati covers three signs and Saturn only occupies one at a time, three consecutive rashis are always running it simultaneously, each in a different phase. And the gap between cycles for any one sign is about twenty-two and a half years — the roughly thirty-year orbit minus the seven and a half years of the transit itself.

Why Sade Sati start and end dates differ between sources

Compare two Sade Sati tables and the dates will often disagree by weeks or even months. This is not usually an error in either. There are three real reasons.

Saturn retrogrades. Roughly once a year Saturn appears to reverse direction for four to five months. When that happens near a sign boundary, Saturn crosses into the next sign, turns back, re-enters the sign it just left, and then crosses forward again months later. Saturn's move into Aries is a clear example: it arrives on 2 June 2027, retreats to Pisces on 20 October 2027, and only settles in Aries on 23 February 2028. Depending on which of those three crossings a source treats as "the" date, a published end date can move by nearly nine months. This calculator lists each crossing separately rather than picking one, which is why a phase may appear as more than one date range.

Ayanamsha. Sidereal positions depend on which ayanamsha is used. This site uses Lahiri, the Indian government standard and the most widely used in Vedic astrology, but a source using Raman or KP will place Saturn's ingress a few days differently.

Mean versus true positions. Some tables round to the nearest month or use a simplified two-and-a-half-years-per-sign model rather than computing the actual transit. Those are approximations by design and will not match a calculated date.

Ashtama Shani, Ardhashtama Shani and Kantaka Shani

Three further Saturn transits are counted separately from Sade Sati and are often mistaken for it. This calculator lists all of them alongside your Sade Sati periods, because a person told they are "under Shani" is frequently in one of these rather than in Sade Sati proper.

• Ashtama Shani — Saturn transiting the eighth sign from your natal Moon, lasting about two and a half years. The eighth house governs sudden change, longevity and things that arrive without warning, and this transit is traditionally read in that register. It is entirely separate from Sade Sati and can occur when Sade Sati is nowhere near.
• Ardhashtama Shani, also called Kantaka Shani — Saturn in the fourth sign from your Moon. Kantaka means "thorn". The fourth house governs home, mother, property and domestic peace, and the transit is conventionally associated with friction in those areas. Some traditions apply the name Kantaka Shani to Saturn in the fourth, seventh or tenth from the Moon; this calculator uses the fourth-house reading, which is the most common.
• Shani Dhaiya — a general term for the roughly two-and-a-half-year Saturn transits over the fourth and eighth from the Moon, which is to say Ashtama Shani and Ardhashtama Shani taken together. "Dhaiya" simply means two and a half.

Sade Sati is not the same as Shani Dasha

These two are constantly conflated and they are completely different measurements.

Sade Sati is a transit. It depends on where Saturn is in the sky right now, relative to your natal Moon. It is the same for everyone born with the Moon in a given sign, whatever year they were born, and it arrives on Saturn's schedule.

Shani Dasha is a planetary period. In the Vimshottari dasha system the life is divided into periods ruled by each planet, allocated from the exact position of your Moon within its nakshatra at birth. Saturn's mahadasha runs for 19 years and arrives once in a normal lifetime, if at all — its timing depends entirely on your individual birth details, not on where Saturn is today.

So it is perfectly possible to be in Sade Sati without being in Shani Dasha, in Shani Dasha without being in Sade Sati, in both, or in neither. Classical practice reads the two together, treating a transit that coincides with the corresponding dasha as considerably more significant than either alone. What the tradition does and does not claim

Sade Sati has acquired a reputation out of proportion to what the classical texts actually say about it, and it is worth being straightforward about that. Saturn is the planet of time, limitation, labour and consequence. A transit of Saturn over the Moon is described as a period that asks for patience, structure and endurance. It is not described anywhere in the standard texts as a guarantee of disaster.

What the tradition does say is that the same transit reads differently depending on the rest of the chart. Saturn's own strength matters, as does which houses Saturn rules from your ascendant, whether Saturn is well or badly placed at birth, and which dasha period is running underneath. Two people in the peak phase in the same month, with different charts, are not in the same situation, and any source that tells you what Sade Sati "will do" to you without looking at those factors is not following the method it claims to follow.

This page deliberately gives you dates and mechanics rather than predictions. The dates are computable and verifiable; the predictions are not. What you make of the period is yours to decide.

How this Sade Sati calculator works

Your Moon's sidereal longitude is computed from your birth date, birth time and birth place using the Swiss Ephemeris with the Lahiri ayanamsha, the standard in Indian astrology. Your birth city is geocoded to a latitude and longitude so that the calculation reflects where you were actually born.

Saturn's ingress into each sign is then scanned across a hundred-year window from your birth year, and every crossing is recorded — including retrograde re-entries, which most published tables omit. From those crossings the calculator derives every Sade Sati period you have lived through and every one still ahead, along with each Ashtama Shani and Ardhashtama Shani period, each labelled by phase with real start and end dates rather than a rounded two-and-a-half-years-per-sign estimate.

Birth time matters less here than on most calculators, because the Moon stays in one sign for about two and a quarter days. Unless you were born close to the moment the Moon changed sign, being an hour or two out will not alter your Sade Sati dates at all. It is still worth entering the time you have, since it is what decides the borderline cases.
